When you’re looking for a new home in Shrewsbury, you probably already know the big hitters. You’ve likely walked through the Quarry, visited the historic red sandstone castle, or spent a Saturday shopping on Pride Hill.

But at DB Roberts, we live where we work. Our team spends their weekends exploring the nooks and crannies of this town, and we’ve realised that some of the best bits of living here aren't in the tourist brochures. As we head into a beautiful May 2026, here are five "hidden gems" that make us proud to call Shrewsbury home.

1. The "Alternative" Skyline View: Haughmond Hill

While everyone flocks to the Wrekin, locals head three miles east of town to Haughmond Hill. For the best views across the River Severn and the Shrewsbury skyline, take the Geo Trail to the viewing platform. If you want a longer escape, the Wilfred’s Walk offers a 3.3-mile trail where you can still spot the lilac and plum trees from an old hill cottage garden.

2. The Best "Work-from-Home" Coffee: Princess & Market Streets

Shrewsbury’s independent coffee scene is essential for the hybrid workers of 2026. Ginger & Co on Princess Street is a local staple with a perfect atmosphere for a focused morning session. Alternatively, head to The Loft Coffee House on Market Street to try their "Rockhopper" coffee, which is freshly roasted right here in town by Iron & Fire.

3. The Floral Jewel: The Dingle at Quarry Park

While the 29-acre Quarry is famous for its events like the Loop Festival in early May, the true heart for locals is The Dingle. This sunken garden, once a medieval stone quarry, features spectacular seasonal displays. In May 2026, you can even go "behind the scenes" at the Weeping Cross nursery to see the 300,000 plants that make these displays world-class.

4. A Hub for Creativity: English Bridge Studios

Located near the iconic English Bridge, this creative community is a must-visit for anyone looking to tap into the town's artistic side. Throughout May 2026, you can catch the English Bridge Studios Showcase at the Gateway Gallery, featuring everything from ceramics to photography created by resident artists. It’s a great way to meet the people who make Shrewsbury’s "West End" so vibrant.

5. Hidden Trails and Wildlife: The Cut Visitor Centre

Tucked away in the Abbey Foregate area, The Cut Visitor Centre is a quiet sanctuary managed by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust. It's a fantastic spot for families, offering hands-on "Pond Life" sessions and "Wildlings" outdoor play for younger children in late May. It’s the perfect place to learn how to make your own new garden more wildlife-friendly.
